For the first time ever, the Minnesota Skinnyski Series (MiSSeries) had a scheduled break off in between two races. The MiSSeries returned in force last Sunday at the beautiful Boulder Lake ski trails just north of Duluth to compete in the sixth annual Boulder Lake Ski Race. Around 200 skiers showed up on a beautiful, sunny, and warm day to compete in the 31k freestyle race.
On the men’s side, Adam Swank returned from skiing Seeley Hills Classic the previous day in order to take the field over Joseph Dubay. Continuing her dominating streak from last year, Mary Beth Tuttle took the women’s field by over two minutes.
In the women’s age group competition, Kathleen DeWahl, Angie Robinson, and Jean Lavelle were the only ones to hold onto their division lead while Carolyn Bramante, Mary Vancura, Cheryl DuBois, Kelly Rogers, and Marilyn Franzen all moved into the lead for the first time.
In a men’s field that didn’t see much change, Joseph Dubay, Adam Swank, Andrew Schakel, Scott Ellertson, David Christopherson, Odd Osland, and, to the surprise of commissioner, John Munger all held onto their spots. Only Nikolai Anikin, John Lavelle, Dwight Beavers, and Wally Hed were the newcomers into the leader spot. The closet race, however, lies in the 50-54 age group where Steve Sonnesyn and Jack Baker are both tied.
| Age Group | Women | Men | | 0-24 | Kathleen DeWahl | Joseph Dubay | | 25-29 | Carolyn Bramante | Nikolai Anikin | | 30-34 | Mary Vancura | Adam Swank | | 35-39 | Jessica Wilson | Andrew Schakel | | 40-44 | Angie Robinson | John Munger | | 45-49 | Cheryl DuBois | Scott Ellertson | | 50-54 | Kelly Rogers | Steve Sonnesyn/Jack Baker | | 55-59 | Marilyn Franzen | David Christopherson | | 60-64 | Jean Lavelle | John Lavelle | | 65-69 | | Odd Osland | | 70-74 | | Dwight Beavers | | 80-84 | | Wally Hed | Overall, David Christopherson kept the men’s lead while Cheryl DuBois moved up to claim the top women’s spot.
Next week, the MiSSeries continues its weekend-by-weekend march by heading to the premiere trails at Giant’s Ridge for the Pepsi Challenge 24k classical. The weather is calling for snow in the northern reaches with a potential major winter storm for portions of the state, but the race is on no matter what. If you are traveling, be careful and take precautions.
Finally, it is my duty as commissioner to remind you all that registration for MiSSeries teams are due no later than Friday. At last year’s banquet, I challenged skiers to stand up to the Cheaters and the Finns and make the team competition one to remember. Remember, you only need 3 skiers to make a team and results are taken from the top 3 male and female skiers who score points in their age group. There is no cost to participate as a team, but the memories of talking smack and holding the traveling trophy will last a lifetime.
The challenge is out there, and I dare you to accept it. Also, if anyone needs another member, let the commissioner know at
